Rothermere was an early enthusiast for fascism, stemming from his extreme anti-Communist line.[1, 5, 7] He viewed strong authoritarian leaders as the necessary solution to the perceived socialist and Bolshevik menace.[5] The paper approved of Benito Mussolini’s 1922 "March on Rome," justifying it by arguing that democracy had failed in Italy.[1] In 1923, Rothermere published a leader titled "What Europe Owes Mussolini," expressing "profound admiration" for the Italian leader, whom he credited with stopping "the inroads of Bolshevism".[1, 5] Rothermere regarded Mussolini as "the greatest figure of our age".[5]
With the rise of Nazism in Germany, Rothermere found a new hero. Following the Nazi party’s significant electoral gains in 1930, the Mail celebrated their success with an article titled "A Nation Reborn".[5] Adolf Hitler, delighted by this support, granted an interview to the Mail’s correspondent, stating his pleasure that Rothermere "could understand what we have in our hearts".[5] Rothermere and Hitler maintained a friendship, corresponding and meeting on several occasions.[5, 8, 9] Rothermere’s obsession with fascism was an ideological extension of his paranoia; he even purchased an estate in Hungary, intending it as an escape route should Britain be conquered by the Soviet Union.[1]
