We are a small group of independent volunteers. We have built and maintain Slippery.News
because we believe that the truth is important and government and democracy should be driven by
evidence, not the whims of a few billionaire media, social media and business proprietors.
We are not affiliated with any political party, business, think tank, lobby group or any
other organisation.
Who funds us?
No one! We do not get paid for our work on Slippery.News, it is a work of principle. Our time
is given free of charge. We do have to pay for server capacity and we fund this ourselves.
Can you help?
We need help in identifying and responding to slippery headlines and with building our
BDMI database of reliable sources to counter mis/dis-information. You don't need to be
a tech wizard, you just need time to do online research and a passion for the truth.
How you can help
We need help in identifying and responding to slippery headlines and with building our Bias,
Dark Money and Influence (BDMI) database of reliable sources to counter mis/dis-information.
You don't need to be a tech wizard, you just need a little time to do online research
and a passion for the truth.
You don’t need to commit to anything, just contribute as and when you can.
It doesn’t have to be regular or a large amount of time, anything you can offer will be appreciated.
You could be researching for an article you are writing, or looking to challenge
that annoying relative who keeps quoting nonsense, if you come across a useful
source or dodgy headline, please let us know.
Headlines
We can’t hope to challenge every misleading headline, there are just too many,
but if you come across a particularly egregious example you can:
Let us know.
Take a good quality screen shot of the whole front page including the headline. Better still
download an image of the front page from one of the ‘front pages today’ web sites such as
the BBC or
Sky News. From
here you can also copy the URL for the front page image so we can prove the front page
really exists.
Identify what it is about the headline that is misleading – break it down into components
if you can. Think about the context at the time the headline was published – why is it
appearing now, who benefits, what sources did they use to support the headline, is their
source reputable or biased, are they quoting one of the biased think tanks or one political
party?
Check our BDMI database to see if we already have sources that help to counter the
headline components.
Search for high quality, reputable sources that provide the truth behind the headline.
Each ‘fact’ behind the headline must have a reputable source so make a note of the
source. If it’s a source of wider relevance, consider having it added it to our BDMI
database.
BDMI
BDMI is a database of reputable sources that can be used to understand why headlines can be so
biased, who benefits, and how dark money infests our democracy. We have categorised the
sources based on whether they primarily address bias in the media and elsewhere, dark money
from opaque sources that distort our democracy, or influence by powerful individuals or groups
who seek to influence those in power without having democratic legitimacy.
If you come across such a source, or you already know of a source, that is not already in our
database please let us know. All we need is a URL and we will do the rest. If you want to do
a bit more you can provide a brief description, a screen shot of the source, and suggested tags.
You can see our list of tags on this page under ‘Search for suggested tags’.
You can also suggest additional tags if you spot a gap.
